The foolish man built his house upon the sand

No matter who we are or where we’re going, to get anywhere we need a solid foundation. The old adage tells us that you can’t build a house upon the sand and expect it to last, it will simply crumble because the sand is constantly shifting and moving. Your personal foundations...

– knowing who you are, what is important, what you stand for – don’t have to be fixed forever but you need to have a good idea of what they are before you can figure out where you’re going and why. Making plans without first knowing where you currently are simply won’t work, it’s like trying to read a map without a ‘you are here’. We won’t spend much time here thinking about why you are where you are, or how you got there. Sometimes delving in to the past is a useful and helpful exercise, that’s where therapy comes in. That’s not what coaching is, coaching is about looking forward, about figuring out where you want to be and getting there.

Beginning with strong foundations is key, to getting where you’re going - imagine you’re a sprinter in the blocks, you’ll probably have a very clear idea of where you want to go but if your blocks are shifting under your feet you’re not going to get a great start and it’ll throw off your whole run. Laying a solid foundation doesn’t have to take long, most of the work – your values and beliefs – are already there. It’s a case of identifying what they are and really knowing yourself. Once you do that, you can make plans and hit (and far exceed) goals.
